Junior Shane Potter drives to the basket in a 2012 game

Led by their front-court, junior Jake Dimond and senior Sam Lack —who both recorded double-doubles, the boys’ varsity basketball team finished off their preseason with a 1-1 record and a Friday night victory, defeating The Pine School 75-59 in The St.Edwards Pirates’ Preseason Classic.

Dimond tallied 16 points and 21 rebounds, and Lack contributed 12 points and snagged 14 rebounds.

Junior Shane Potter also had 14 points in one of the highest scoring games in Wildcat history.

Potter attributed the victory to their fast-paced play on the offensive end and their awareness and activity on the defensive end.

“In the first half we didn’t really stop running and kept going on the fast break,” Potter said. “We had active hands on defense and we try to get as many steals and rebounds as possible.  We shot lights out in the first half and we were really consistent from the free-throw line.”

After shooting 10-30 from the free throw line in their pre-season opener against St. Edwards, the team rebounded to shoot 18-23 (78%) against the Pine School.

The Cats open regular season play on Monday when they travel to play the Holy Trinity Tigers. The junior varsity contest will begin at 5:30 p.m., and varsity follows at 7:00 p.m.
