The roar of engines fills the air as 22 drivers stare up at the blinking red lights, the anticipation building in their chests. The crowd watches with bated breath; the red lights are still flashing, counting down the seconds until the race starts. The last light blinks on — it’s lights out and away they go. As the cars tear through the opening lap at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claws his way to the lead in a fierce battle with Mercedes’ George Russell, marking the official start of the chase to the 2026 World Drivers’ Championship.
REGULATIONS
For the first time since 2022, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), has introduced entirely new regulations for the cars, prompting fresh designs and new achievements in engineering. This year, the cars have been downsized — they are both shorter and narrower than they have been in years in an attempt to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics. The Drag Reduction System has also been revamped; instead of just the back wing opening, front and back wing angles can be adjusted and the addition of the overtake button allows for an extra boost of electrical energy to aid in overtakes on track.
GRID CHANGES
The 2026 racing season sees a new face on the grid — that of 18-year-old Arvid Lindblad, who replaced Isaak Hadjar at the Racing Bulls as Hadjar moved up to Red Bull. However, the more shocking change to the grid is the addition of Cadillac to the paddock. For the first time in a decade, there are 11 teams and 22 drivers, which has led to an overhaul of qualifying procedures during each race week. In previous, qualifying has comprised three sessions, with five drivers eliminated in both the first and second sessions based on the slowest times. However, this year, in order to ensure that the third session still only has the 10 fastest drivers, six drivers are being eliminated in each session.
AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
Preseason testing set the stage for a thrilling first race, with Ferrari topping the time board in a shocking move from the team that has become the butt of a thousand jokes in the past few seasons. However, the real question was whether the iconic Italian team could keep that trajectory in an actual race, which they absolutely succeeded in. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton found themselves in third and fourth respectively, following Mercedes’ George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in first and second. Overall, the Australian Grand Prix was a wild and chaotic race that felt like watching a round of Mario Kart; between the mechanical carnage and the addition of the boost button, which effectively worked as a mushroom power-up, something about the race felt vaguely unreal in a highly entertaining way.
CHINESE GRAND PRIX
If possible, the season only grew crazier in the second race weekend of the calendar. In a shocking twist for last year’s Constructors’ Champions McLaren, neither of the violently orange cars even started the race. The McLaren drivers were not the only ones who fell off the score board, though; between collisions, mechanical issues and abrupt retirements, only 15 of the 22 drivers managed to finish the race. However, the most standout moment of the entire race was easily 19-year-old Antonelli achieving his first ever win in Formula One, and becoming the second-youngest race winner in the history of the sport. He was joined on the podium by his teammate Russell, as well as Hamilton, marking the latter’s first ever podium at Ferrari.
CONCLUSION
The standings post Saudi Arabian Grand Prix see Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli in first, followed by Russell. Ferrari’s Leclerc and Hamilton are in third and fourth, respectively, and are followed by reigning world champion Lando Norris of McLaren in fifth. While these are only the standings after three of 26 races, they set up the potential for a thrilling season. If it continues like this, then Mercedes may be set for their first Constructor’s Championship since 2021. If Ferrari can get close — and sort out their strategy — then perhaps they will have their most successful season in years. Or maybe a new contender will sweep through the field and take the championship by storm. It’s far too early to tell who will be in the chase for the title for good, but one thing is certain — this is sure to be a fascinating season.
