Freshmen August Terry and Adelia Torvik are creating crochet manatees for a fundraiser. The manatees will be sold at the Florida Junior Classical League State Latin Forum at the Wyndham Orlando Resort and Convention Center on April 11-13.

“We are selling these at the Latin state competition to gain some money for the Latin program,” Terry said.

They are creating a variety of sizes and colors of manatee.

“We are selling the larger ones for around $15 and the smaller ones for around $7,” Torvik said.

They are making multiple manatees before their due date in April.

“We’re trying to make as many as possible, but we’re leaning towards like 20 or 30,” Terry said. “I personally have about four skeins of yarn, so I was just gonna see how many I can make based off of just those.”

Terry and Torvik create the manatees with a variety of materials.

“I am using yarn, hooks and safety eyes,” Torvik said. “I am also using stuffing to stuff them.”

Each manatee gets a name when they are finished. A few examples are Nelson, Humphrey and Susan. There will be one giant manatee raffled off at the competition in April.

“I thought it would be a cute added touch if we gave them name tags,” Terry said. “I am trying to make original names, so all of them have unique names. This might encourage people to buy them.”
