Chin named finalist in science competition

When Michelle Chin recently received an email stating that she was one out of five finalists in the Dr. Ying Science Competition, the junior said she couldn’t believe it.

“It took a minute to sink in,” she said. “I was really surprised and extremely honored. It’s a really big award.”

The Dr. Ying science competition encourages students to help humanity through scientific research and is hosted in collaboration with the Orlando Science Center. High school students submit their science research papers which are reviewed by a panel of judges which selects the five finalists.

“I was really excited for Michelle,” science teacher Paula Ladd said. “I’ve nominated other students before but she’s the first one in a long time.”

If Chin is wins the “Ying Prize” she will receive $5,000 as well as $1,000 for both her teacher and school principal.
