When senior Auston Gonzalez was in 10th-grade he broke the school record for most three-pointers made in a boys’ varsity basketball game, making the new record seven three-pointers in one game. On Feb. 1, Senior Night, Gonzalez broke his own record. 

At halftime head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball, Coach Wardell Collins, went over to Gonzalez’s mom and held up his pointer finger to her, to let her know that Gonzalez had to make one more 3-pointer to break his own record.

Sure enough, Gonzalez came out right after halftime and made the shot. 

“Honestly, I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to break these records,” Gonzalez said. “Since I’ve joined the program, none of my teammates have ever been selfish and they’ve always encouraged me to shoot.”

While there is pride in breaking a school record, Gonzalez was sure to appreciate those who helped him reach is goal.

“Coach Collins is one of the best coaches I’ve ever had,” Gonzalez said. “He’s done nothing but push me to improve this entire year, and I’m thankful for him and his teachings.” 

The team’s next game is scheduled for Thursday against Cocoa Beach at Space Coast Jr/Sr High School.
