Crowley, Sherry pace track team in Merritt Island meet

Junior Kate Crowley finished fifth in the mile, sophomore Jackie Sherry finished fourth out of 12 competitors for the long jump and the boys’ and girls’ track team placed seventh out 12 schools at a track meet held at Merritt Island High School on Friday.

In addition, junior Joel Wadzinski placed sixth in the shot put and sophomores Luke Redito and Jacob Smithe placed eighth and 13th respectively in the mile. Redito also placed fourth in the two-mile.

“I think that overall our team scores have been pretty encouraging considering that we lost many of our track members this year to the new sport, lacrosse, which takes place in the same season,” said Smithe, the team’s top distance runner. “With the few members we have, everyone is really putting forth a lot of effort to make our track team stand out.”

Other schools at the meet included Merritt Island, Holy Trinity, Cocoa Beach, Brevard HEAT, Palm Bay, Satellite, Astronaut, Melbourne, Eau Gallie, East River and Space Coast.

“Just because we don’t have many competitors, we do have a handful of strong competitors in several events which obviously shows in big meets like this one,” senior captain Michael Field said. “Even if we don’t get first place, I think it’s good for each one of us to have a feel for true competition.”
