Spanish teacher settles in as JV cheer coach

Spanish teacher Mireya Ramos joined the growing cheerleading program as new JV coach after the team experienced two coaching changes during the past two years.

Ramos’ son, Suriel, a junior, introduced her to cheerleading when he joined the team a couple of years ago. When the team needed a new coach, she decided to fill the role. Although Ramos has not coached cheer before, she said she loves to dance. Dancing is a part of cheer, so this helps her understand more about it.

Ramos said she will rely on her “two amazing captains” to help her coach the team.

JV captains Hannah Jones, a freshman, and Grace Pearson, a junior, help her support the team and learn about the sport. Other members of the team contribute too.

“Almost all of us have cheered before,” eighth-grader Carina W. said.

One quarter of the way into the cheer season, Ramos and the team continues to bond. Even though she did not know much about cheerleading when she started, her passion for the sport and her commitment to the team continue to grow.

“ I don’t have any daughters, so they are all my girls,” Ramos said.
