Mathcounts draws middle-school attention

Debra Jerdon hosts the middle school club, Mathcounts every Monday, Power Hour A. The purpose of the club is to build confidence and make math more enjoyable.

The meetings consist of math games and other non-traditional ways of learning. According to seventh grader, Zach F., it’s been going great.

“Math is pretty fun and it’s very interesting to learn and do,” he said.

There are a few official spring competitions but Jerdon holds multiple in-club competitions throughout the year.

“Sometimes we split them into two groups and do teams, or sometimes individuals,” Jerdon said. “We have like buzzers so they can buzz in and answer questions.”

Any middle-schooler looking to join is allowed to, but they should expect a challenge.

“Some of the concepts, I don’t really understand because I haven’t reached that level yet, but hopefully in the future, I can learn more and be better at Mathcounts,” Zach said.

Jerdon has been sponsoring Mathcounts for multiple years, but said it’s always new and exciting.

“I try to let the high-school students that used to be in it as middle-school students run a lot of the meetings as student leaders, so depending on who the student leaders are, it can have a very different flavor,” she said.
