Girls’ varsity basketball seeks to cope with loss of seniors

The girls’ varsity basketball team will need to make replacements during tryouts after losing five of last years’ seniors.

Losing these players means the team will lose a large amount of leadership and talent that helped the the Lady Wildcats to a respectable 11-9 record last year.

“It’s definitely going to be strenuous trying to find people to step up and fill their spots,” senior Abby Hedrick said about the now-graduated seniors.

Hedrick, a power-forward on last years’ team, also said that there would be players ready to step into those roles left absent. Freshman Emily Marshall said the JV team would supply many of those players.

“I’m assuming a lot of the JV is going to be moving up,” Marshall said. “Especially with a lot of JV players now being juniors, they’re probably going to step up to varsity.”

Marshall said the team would be mainly replacing some guard positions, along with one big-man role, losing important players in both of those roles. However, despite the losses, she said she holds an optimistic view towards the season.

“There isn’t a point in time where our team is ever going to step back and be worse than before, we’re always going to improve,” Marshall said.
