Teachers help students navigate stress of exam season

Exam season is upon us, and with it comes the inevitable stress that students face as they try to balance their coursework with studying for tests. Students have reported feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to perform well on their exams. Yet, sophomore Amelia Bailly said there have been some positive developments that have helped alleviate some of this pressure.

“It’s been stressful, but teachers have been very understanding about students’ busy schedules,” Bailly said. “In English, Mrs. [Tam] Reis has specifically said to work on studying for APs in her class if we have one the next morning and has been lenient on due dates to accommodate for such exams, which has been nice.”

By being flexible with due dates and encouraging students to focus on their most pressing exams, teachers are helping students manage their workload and prioritize their studies effectively, which consequently eases the strain on students’ mental health.

Bailly also noted that she felt this year’s exam season was less hectic.

“Personally, I’d say this exam season has seemed less stressful than in the past,” she said. “I figured that’s because I’m now used to a normal West Shore exam schedule after the wonky exams during COVID these past few years.”

While exam season is always going to be a stressful time for students, teachers play a big role in alleviating that pressure.

“Teachers have been very accommodating and respectful about different classes taking priority,” Bailly said. “I think it’s made a difference and has helped me feel more confident going into my exams.”
