New teacher lauds homeroom experience

For newly arrived social studies teacher Athena Pietrzak, homeroom represents a place for bonding with students and trying new things.

“I love homeroom,” Pietrzak said. “I think it is an integral part of being at West Shore. It is a privilege to have you from this day forward to your graduation.”

For sophomores in her group, homeroom is more than just an extra class Friday’s schedule. Pietrzak lets students bring in snacks every week because she wants it to be fun for everyone.

“I would like to see our homeroom grow and continue to be an additional support as the stresses of life increase in high school,” Pietrzak said.

One of her students, Abi Johnson, likes what’s happening in homeroom.

“I think she’s doing a good job especially because she’s new to West Shore,” she said. “It’s just a weird change because we used to have Mr. Peterson and we didn’t do anything”

For Pietrzak homeroom is a chance to try out new things.

“I am trying to get the grade level homerooms together,” Pietrzak said. “We need to share grade-level spirit as we are going to be in junior year soon.”
