Varsity basketball tryouts begin Oct. 30

The varsity basketball team is holding tryouts Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m, Oct. 31 from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Nov. 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“The workouts we do during the season are different from tryouts,” senior Lorenzo DeVito, a returning player, said. “We change it up every week, so there is not a specific set of exercises we do, but we always run for about 45 minutes and play for whatever time we have left in the practice. We usually practice from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and we have it three times a week.”

Most of the team are returning athletes from the previous year, so they have a sense of familiarity with the training. However, it seems that no matter how familiar they are with the practice, it always pushes them to their limit.

“I literally started throwing up, like dry heaving, after doing a lot of the practices when they got brought back for tryouts,” senior Garret Martin, another returning varsity player, said.

With tryouts approaching, varsity coach Corey Burton detailed what practice and overall body training for tryouts and the upcoming season are like.

“It’s just being in good shape, being strong, not letting contact overwhelm you, being physical and not standing still,” Burton said. “That’s why the conditioning is so hard, and strength training [is] so important.”
