NHS completes toy drive

National Honor Society is wrapping it its annual holiday shoebox project for underprivileged children around the world. The project supplies toys, school supplies and accessories for children between the ages of 2 and 14 in Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia. Students participating in the drive, pick a gender and an age group, and get items they believe the children will enjoy.

“It was a huge success. This is one of my favorite fundraisers,” NHS Sponsor Missy Henderson said. “We will do it again. It makes me so happy to know that we will be making so many little kids happy.”

Last year, the fund-raiser took in more than 50 boxes of toys, supplies and clothes.

“I was inspired to start this project at school because I have gone on mission trips to impoverished areas like Honduras,” said NHS president Margarita Sanchez, who came up with the idea for the project. “One of the things I noticed was how thankful these people were for whatever blessing came their way.”

Sanchez said she hopes future presidents continue the project  after she graduates this year.
