Middle-schooler is Athlete of the Week runner-up

Eighth-grader Erynn M. recently earned a nomination for Florida Today’s Athlete of the Week. Erynn finished the season as the top scoring player on the girls’ varsity basketball team, averaging 17 points per game with more than 400 points scored overall this season.

“I was happy because it never happened to me before and it excited me,” she said. “ I’m pretty sure Coach Derrick [Hamilton] nominated me. He talked about it with me and he was talking about my stats and how they were really good.”

Erynn scored 23 points during the Merritt Island matchup. Coach Hugh Bain explained that she earned this nomination because of how well she played during that game.

“It was well deserved,” Bain said. “In addition to the points scored against Merritt Island, which is the focus of the nomination, she also earned a double-double, her 14th of the season, she was 8 for 9 in 2-point shots and 7 for 8 in free throws. She only had two personal fouls and zero turnovers.”

Erynn finished second in the Athlete of the Week voting, but still received more than 13,000 votes.

“Everyone is happy for Erynn and supportive,” Bain said. “It all goes back to her earning that nomination and deserving it. Her teammates understand that and agree.”
