Girls place sixth; Stevens qualifies for State

Senior Kayla Stevens qualified for State as she help lead the West Shore girls’ swim team to a sixth-place finish at the Class 1A Region 2 Swimming Championships at Winter Park’s Trinity Prep High School on Saturday.

“[There were} some fabulous swims by Kayla Stevens, [freshman] Shelby McKeever, [seventh-grader] Sydney Weatherspoon and some great dives by [senior] Kara Marin and [freshman] Megan Lee,” Coach Don Gornto said. [There were] too many personal records broken to name.”

Stevens will compete in the Class 1A state meet Saturday at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

Last week,  Stevens was crowned district champ in the 200 free and 100 free events to lead the girls to a third consecutive district runner-up trophy. Senior Emily Dubec-Hunter was individual district runner-up in the 100-meter backstroke.  The boys’ team placed fifth in the meet, which was held at at Indian River State College in Vero.  Senior Jack Nevins shaved 7 seconds off his personal record in the 100 butterfly and clocked a best time in his 50-meter freestyle by dropping 1.5 seconds.
