Senior and AP Drawing student Kahlia Hsieh is making her AP project, a series of artwork that students create throughout the school year, about Asian folk tales with a modern twist. She was inspired by the book “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin.

“When I was coming up with my concentration, I started thinking about books I like for inspiration,” Hsieh said. “This book immediately came to mind because it had lots of stories that I thought would be cool to illustrate.”

She is using colored pencils and acrylic paint to create her pieces.

“Those are the mediums I’m most comfortable with,” Hsieh said. “I have also been trying to experiment by incorporating new mediums such as metallic watercolor paint.”

She is submitting 13 pieces and two steps that are all tied together through her color choices of blue, green and gold in each drawing.

“Her ideas are just so unique,” art teacher Jelena Robbins said. “It’s rare to have a student who can transfer something from their thoughts onto paper so effectively and so creatively.”
