Boys’ varsity basketball team set

Thirteen players emerged from Monday’s boys’ basketball tryouts with high expectations for the season ahead.

“I expect a trip to regionals,” senior Juan Rodriguez said. “All we have to do is beat one of the top teams in the district whether it be Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, Melbourne Central Catholic High School  or Cocoa High School in the second round of districts in order for us to advance. I’m confident we have enough talent to beat any of those three teams at any given time.”

Rodriguez added he’s excited about the prospect of working with new teammates.

“We have Travis McClendon and Auston Gonzalez this year, and they are lights-out shooters, so whenever they are on the court they can knock down a few threes. They’ll spread the floor which will open up driving lanes and scoring opportunities for others.”

In addition to team expectations, Rodriguez also has set some personal goals.

“I hope to lead the team in assists and steals as well as be second in scoring behind Evan Lanier like last year,” he said. “I also wish to be named to the Florida Today All-County Team.”

Junior Khalil Paul also has set personal goals for the season.

“I would like to become an all around better player and average around 10 points, six assists and four rebounds,” he said. “I would also like to learn how to be a leader to be prepared for next year as I will be a senior next year.”

Preseason opens on Nov. 16 in the  Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School gym.
