Track team off to a fast start

The boys’ and girls’ track teams both placed ninth overall out of 12 schools at a meet held at Astronaut High School on Friday.

“With it just being our first meet, I am pretty content with the results,” varsity captain Jacob Smithe said. “We had some very impressive performances on the distance-side, as well as with the field events,  such as discus and shot put.”

Highlights of the meet included junior Luke Redito placing sixth in the 3,200 meters, with a time of 10:20; junior Sarah Day placing third in the 3,200 with a time of 11:21; junior Jacob Smithe placing fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:52 and senior Kate Crowley placing ninth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:01. In addition, senior Joel Wadzinski placed fourth in shot put and third in discus throw.

“Despite the small size of our team, we placed well and everyone gave their best effort into contributing to our points earned,” said Redito, the team’s top distance runner. “Looking at all the factors we had against us — the weather, first-race jitters and our lack of team members — I’m especially proud of how we did. I’m anticipating a successful season ahead of us.”
