Swimmers squash Heritage in opener

The girls’ swim team shellacked Heritage High 128-42 Thursday and the boys won 107-63 in the season-opener for both squads.

Before the meet, tensions were running high as students approached the block for their first competitive race of the year.

“I don’t know, I’m kind of nervous, but mostly excited,” said freshman Noah Murphy before his first event.

After his initial race, Murphy was able to continue through the meet without the jitters he had before his first laps of the season.

“After my hand hit the wall at the end of the race and I realized I had done OK, my anxiety went away,” Murphy said. “Everyone was out here to win, and I had a good time,”

Senior Trevor Stammand, who holds the school record in swimming the 100 yards backstroke, expressed his enthusiasm for the rest of the Wildcats’ season.

“So far we’ve been doing great in practices, and after today’s meet I’m stoked to see what the rest of the year holds.” he said. “I think we can go far.”

Their next swim meet will be against Bayside High on Tuesday at the Fee Avenue Pool.
