Purrfections prepare for Saturday’s county competition

The Purrfections dance team is participating in the 15th annual Brevard County Dance Competition on Saturday at Bayside High School.

“We [dance team] started learning the routines for the competition in October. We have had extra practices on holidays,” said April Shaw, who has competed the past four years as the teams’ coach. “I expect Purrfection.”

The JV dancers will be competing in the pom division against Jefferson Middle School. Varsity is competing in the jazz and pom division against Bayside High School.  Two dancers are competing solo routines: Stephanie Shaw is competing against nine other sophomores and Kassidy Silva is competing for a scholarship against 10 other seniors.

“Competition is what we work toward all year,” said senior Mikayla Larson, a varsity dance team member. “We only enter one competition a year, so we really have only one shot to hold our own against the rest of Brevard.”

The choreography being brought to competition this year by the Purrfections differs from their past routines.

“We’ve pushed ourselves physically and creatively,” Larson said. “Our dances are much more strenuous than in past years, and we are doing things as a team (full team turns, lifts) that we never thought possible.”
