Practice makes perfect for dancers

The varsity dance team, the Purrfections, is currently practicing for the start of the varsity basketball and soccer seasons. Every Monday and Friday, the team practices in the auditorium. Dance styles that the team will perform at halftimes include jazz, pom, kick and hip-hop.

“As of right now, we are focusing on our game dances to make sure those are performance ready, and then once those are polished, we will start working on our competition routines,” said junior Jessie Shaw, who has been on the team since seventh grade.

The dancers learned their routines over the summer at the Universal Dance Association camp for school dance teams. At this camp, schools from all over Florida come together to learn dances, play games and bond as teams. Sophomore Lauren Novak says how much she enjoys being part of the group.

“I really love all the varsity girls,” Novak said. “Even though I’m the only sophomore on the dance team, none of the other dancers hesitate to treat me like family.”

You can see the varsity Purrfections perform for yourself on Dec. 2 at the first varsity basketball home game.
