Girls varsity soccer lost 2-1 to Holy Trinity on Dec. 15. The loss was the team’s first of the season and brought Holy Trinity’s record to 4-4.

Freshman Sofia Ribeiro, chosen as Player of the Match, scored West Shore’s goal, bringing her to a total of five goals this season. Ribeiro said the team focused on following its game plan throughout the match.

“We worked to move the ball and create chances when opportunities were there,” Ribeiro said. “Our goal came from staying organized in the offense.”

Ribeiro said the team adjusted its approach as the game progressed.

“We made some changes in the second half and tried to work more as a team and shut down their offense,” Ribeiro said. “We stayed focused on our responsibilities.”

Varsity player and sophomore Beyla Neal said the match required consistent communication and positioning.

“Both teams moved the ball well, so it was important to stay aware and communicate,” Neal said. “We had to stay disciplined defensively.”

Neal said the team identified areas to strengthen moving forward.

“This game showed us where we can improve in terms of execution and decision-making,” Neal said. “Those are things we’ll continue to work on in practice.”

With the result, West Shore’s record moved to 7-1-1, while Holy Trinity returned to an even record.

West Shore is scheduled to play Viera at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8.

“[The game against Viera] is probably going to be one of our hardest games of the season, but if we come out with a sense of urgency and score early, we’ll be able to control the game from there,” said Ribeiro  “There’s definitely a good kind of nervous energy going into it, especially against a nearby school, but after studying how they play, I’m excited to see how we respond.”
