Girls’ soccer shuts out Mel High
Junior Brittany Etrick scored a goal early in the first half on a corner kick from the right following a pass from senior Claire Rauchfuss to defeat two-time defending state champion Melbourne High School 1-0 in a girls’ soccer game Thursday night. It was Etrick’s first game back from a knee injury sustained a week earlier during practice.
West Shore goalie Megan Green played a key role in the victory.
“She played amazing and she saved two one-on-one shots,” sophomore forward Luisa De La Hoz said.
No current team member had ever beaten Mel High.
“The intensity was really high,” sophomore defender Kelly Batache said. “We were all pumped because at half time we were winning, and there was a lot of pressure to stay winning.”
The team received a pep talk from Coach Teresa Moon at half time.
“She just told us not to change anything,” Batache said. “She knows the Mel coach, so she really wanted to beat him.”
