Cross-country kicks off with Jamboree

The cross-country team will be running the preseason Wickham Park Jamboree 5k race Saturday, the boys’ team at 7 a.m. followed by the girls’ team at 7:30 a.m. The Jamboree not only will be the first cross country race of the school year, but will also be the first competition under the guidance of head coach Gregory Hayes.

“I’m excited for the first race environment with the new coaches and runners,” said senior Maegan Muir, one of last year’s varsity runners.

The Jamboree is an unofficial race, open to all, and as such does not contribute to the cross country team record. Instead, the race is used by the coaches to determine who will take the seven spots on each of the boy’s and girl’s varsity teams.

“[I’m also ready] to get an idea of how everything’s going to go this season,” Muir said.

While race participants are not allowed to wear team uniforms, many of the girls’ team plan to take advantage of the rule to show their team spirit in more interesting ways.

Said Muir: “We girls are utilizing the freedom for outfits since this is outside-of-the-school season, so we’re coordinating animal print spandex and black tops or sports bras.”
