After a 16-6 loss to Melbourne Central Catholic High School in a district playoff game Tuesday, the boys’ varsity lacrosse team’s season came to an end. The Wildcats ended the year with a 4-10 record, an improvement from last season, during which the team finished with a 1-12 record. Coach Dan Scheuerer was credited by some players with helping to point the team in a positive direction.

“The new coach really took us by surprise,” sophomore midfielder Walter Wilinsky said. “We didn’t know what to expect, and when we were practicing. There was sometimes a feeling of ‘why are we doing this?’ But then we came to realize every drill had its purpose in getting the team prepared to win.”

Sophomore Cheyne Johnson explained how the change in coaching set up the team for success.

“I feel like the coach did a phenomenal job”, Johnson said. “Although Coach Scheuerer was a big factor in our success, I believe this team had always been able to do what we did this season. The structure he gave to our team brought out the best in us.”

Johnson also attributes the preparation that took place before the season with helping players polish their skills and perform better in games.

“Coach ran a rigorous conditioning program that helped us improve our endurance and speed, which helped us finish strong in games we otherwise would’ve been too tired to play as hard as we did,” Johnson said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team and I believe we have so much more to show.”
