Girls varsity basketball defeats MCC, breaks losing streak

The girls varsity basketball team defeated Melbourne Central Catholic (MCC) at home on Jan. 24, breaking their eight-game losing streak with a score of 41-32.

“I felt that we worked really hard and deserved it because we deserved to win back our own court,” freshman Tiffany Duong said.

This is Duong’s first year on the varsity team, previously playing for the junior varsity team during her eighth grade year. Duong said being on varsity “lets [her] learn a lot and be surrounded by people that have more experience.”

Team member and junior Emily Marshall dropped her first double-double, which is when a player hits double digits in two of the five categories – points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots – in one game. Marshall dropped her double-double with 21 points and 16 assists.

“I felt pretty good,” Marshall said. “It’s my first ever double-double, so I mean, that’s really cool.”

Marshall is also first in the district to average 1.4 blocks per game.

“It’s pretty cool, I’ve never actually placed high in that sort of thing,” Marshall said. “I just hope I can keep it up for the rest of the season.”

Second-year varsity player and sophomore Reagan Hill also gave her insight on this season.

“We definitely lost quite a few games that we shouldn’t have lost, but I like the way we practice a lot better and we’ve overall improved from last year,” Hill said. “Being on the team is a lot of work, but I’ve made a lot of friends through it so I think it’s worth it.”

West Shore’s win bumped them to a record of 3-9.
