Varsity Volleyball secures second sweep on the road against Cocoa Beach

The varsity volleyball team went on the road to face Cocoa Beach after sweeping Eau Gallie 3-0 to even its record at 1-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The Wildcats started off hot in the first set, scoring the first 10 points without giving up a point. On set point, senior Violet Castillo dove for a dig and, still on the floor, made another save, which was dumped over by senior Keira Lee to win the set 25-7.

The second set followed the same script of Wildcat dominance, taking the set 25-7.

This momentum carried into the third set, where the Wildcats won 25-12, securing their second consecutive sweep on the road.

Head coach Sally Winter said she wanted to highlight the team’s defensive efforts in this game and how that spark allowed for a successful offense.

“If I were to highlight a specific player from last night, it would be senior Claire Chen, our right back,” Winter said. “It is a unanimous decision across the team that her work ethic has translated to on-court skill, and the value of having her on the court is extremely high this season.”

The varsity volleyball team will return home Friday, Aug. 29, to face Melbourne, where the Wildcats will try to earn the first win against Melbourne in program history. Head coach Winter said the girls are hungry to set new records after letting the season opener against Viera slip away from them.

The match theme is Lūʻau. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in the West Shore gym.
