Holiday homework can be valid

Being assigned a five-page essay the day before spring break can be a student’s worst nightmare. But that practice could change. School board chairwoman Amy Kneessy has heard your anguished cries and proposed a policy prohibiting teachers from giving homework to students during Thanksgiving break, winter break or spring break.

However, in today’s progressively advancing world, it can be argued that students need to constantly exercise their brains by working on assignments every day, including while on breaks from school. Once in the real world, students will be forced to compete with people from all across the world. In the long run, vacation homework will greatly benefit students.

Yet if the assignments are “busy work” or merely copying words straight from a textbook, then they become pointless.Students will not learn anything if they can mindlessly complete their homework while watching their favorite reality show.

Teachers should be allowed to assign minimal amounts of homework over vacations if that work is meaningful. But they should remember that students need to have the opportunity to stimulate their brains or else risk losing prior knowledge learned. But students still need the time to refresh and have fun during extended vacations so they can become motivated to learn when they return to school.

Students also need to have the opportunity to stimulate their brains or else topics covered in school will inevitably be forgotten. The homework should be minimal, as students need the time to refresh and have fun over vacation periods so they can be motivated to learn when they return to school.
