Senior Alexis Clark woke up at 5:30 on Saturday morning, excited to fulfill the long-awaited tradition of senior parking spot painting. She was then notified, to her discontent, that the event would be postponed due to inclement weather.
“It’s pitch black out,” Clark said. “I load up this wagon filled with paint supplies; I pull two cases of Coke out of my fridge and put them in my trunk. I throw a tent into my back seat. My entire car is jam-packed, and this was so early in the morning it was so difficult to get that wagon in there.”
Clark said she left her house extra early to go to Dunkin to pick up donuts for her and her friends.
“So I’m on my way,” Clark said. “But then I see a little text pop up on my phone and it says it’s canceled – 15 minutes before we’re supposed to be there. So what am I supposed to do? Turn around and go home with an entire 12 pack of donuts? I was just very angry and I wish they would have canceled sooner because that was just abominable.”
Senior class historian Iona Peters also said she was disappointed by the cancellation.
“I woke up Saturday morning to rain outside,” Peters said. “There was a text that said we’re rescheduling because it is going to rain all day long and all weekend long. There was a lot of flooding too, so our parking spots wouldn’t have dried.”
Peters said she understands the decision to postpone the parking spot painting.
“I’m just frustrated that I got all the paint and we didn’t get to do it,” Peters said. “But I get it because I don’t want my spot ruined by the rain.”
Senior class sponsor Kim Walling said the parking spot painting is planned to be rescheduled to Oct.21, but the date has not been approved by administration yet.
“It has taken so long to come about in the first place,” Walling said. “Sept. 2 was a Saturday and that was Labor Day weekend. Then, on Saturday Sept. 9, many of our students were taking the ACT test so they didn’t want to do it that day. The following Saturday was Sept. 16 and that was a Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah, and we have students who celebrate that, so we didn’t want to do it on that day. The following week, we offered that day to the students, which was the 23rd of September. But it was Homecoming, so they decided they didn’t want to do it on Homecoming. And then this Saturday coming up is the SAT.”
