Senior Tryphina Mikhail won a 10th place award in the individual statistics round, and the calculus team received a fourth-place award at the Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta competition at Lake Mary High School on Jan. 19.
Forty-eight students competed against 36 other schools’ teams. Groups of four competed in both individual and team rounds. The Algebra 1 team won fifth place out of 15 teams, and seventh-graders Aaron H. and Muhammad A. received ninth and 10th place respectively out of 68 students.
“I was really happy with their awards because it was their first time ever at the competition,” team sponsor Debra Jerdon said. “And of course it’s more fun when you actually win the trophies.”
Junior Taryn Tolle, who competed in the calculus division, recommends going to the competitions.
“The competitions are a good challenge, but I like competing because I get to hang out with my friends on the weekend,” she said. “I hope we’ll do even better next time.”
Tolle and other team members will compete next at Suncoast Community High School on Feb. 2 and Seminole High School on March 16.
