Mu Alpha Theta gears up for competition

The first FAMAT math competition for this year has been scheduled for Saturday at Oviedo High School. West Shore will be taking 39 students to compete in algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, statistics, precalculus and calculus.

“We have been practicing since mid-Oct. and can’t wait to demolish all the other schools,” said junior Robert Edmiston, who will be competing in the Precalculus Division.

Team members will participate in two rounds in which they take an individual test and a team test. Students placing in the top 16 for individual tests and top 5 for team tests will receive trophies. West Shore’s Mu Alpha Theta team has won more than 20 team trophies in the past five years. In recent years there have been about 30 teams participating in the Region 3 FAMAT competitions in which West Shore competes.

The Mu Alpha Theta team will also compete in two more competitions later in the year – one in February and one in March.
