Lacrosse game features ALS fund-raiser

A fund-raiser for the Jason Whitworth family will be held at the West Shore versus Rockledge boys’ lacrosse game Thursday. Coach Whitworth taught physical education classes and coached the cross-country team at West Shore until he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2011, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. He taught in Brevard County for 12 years.

During the games, a raffle will be held for Disney park hopper passes and Brevard Zoo tickets. In between the junior varsity and varsity games, a presentation will be shown.

“Admission to the game is free,”  senior Malik Richardson said. “We are all going to wear brighter socks to support ALS.”

Science teacher Amy McCormick has been friends with the Whitworth family since 2005, when Coach Whitworth first began teaching at West Shore.

“Every little bit helps,” McCormick said.” Their expenses are more than I can imagine.”

The junior-varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m. and varsity begins at 7 p.m.
