In order to raise funds for Teacher Appreciation, High School Student Government is hosting a black light volleyball tournament in the the gym on Friday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Teams must consist of four players and can sign up in the cafeteria during lunch for $5 per player.
“It’s going to be completely dark except for the black lights,” SGA Secretary Amanda Farthing said. “The ball will glow and you will be able to see the net and white lines since they will be white.
Farthing seemed optimistic about how the event will go.
“It will be really fun competition,” Farthing said. “I know that there is quite a few teams coming to play. Playing open gym volleyball is always really fun. It’s a sport that you can be intense about and have a lot of fun at the same time.”
Those who plan to participate also have high expectations for the event.
“I’m excited to play in the tournament because it is a new event that has never been done at West Shore before,” participant Lindsay Gorham said. “I think its going to be really cool to play volleyball under black lights since everything is going to glow. My team is going to win.”
Prizes will be awarded for overall winner, best costume and best spirit.
“I like to think of myself as a very spirited person,” junior player Sam Lack said. “I have spirit in the classroom and its sure to shine through on the court.”
People who want to be part of the event but not play can purchase tickets for $2 during lunch this week. Teams will not be able to sign up at the door.
“I’m hoping that everyone who attends has a good time and that we make a lot of money to help fund teacher appreciation week,” SGA President Jackie Sherry said. “It should be a really fun night.”
