Seniors place first at art festival

Seniors Daphna Krause and Liliana LeBeau each placed first in the Space Coast Art Festival. West Shore students also swept two categories.

Many students from graphic design teacher Jim Finch’s class entered the countywide competition which took place Nov. 23.

“To be honest, I was surprised [when I won] because this was the first art show I’ve ever entered,” senior Travis Hoibraten said.

Hoibraten’s piece won second place in Digital Design.

“I made a triptych of my cross-country shoes,” Hoibraten said.

The art will be exhibited at the 11th annual Brevard Digital Art Show in January and at the Strawbridge Art Show in February.

The winning students also received prize money and recognition from the county.

“I was awarded first place in photography and received a $100 check,” Krause said. “You have to be ready to answer questions about what techniques were used in your piece and the message you’re trying to convey as an artist.”

Krause said her approach to art shows is different from other competitions.

“For art shows, you don’t really prepare,” she said. “I think that if you showed your artwork, you are a winner. It takes a lot to put yourself out there.”

A total of 10 West Shore students placed in the competition.
