Jazz Band ready to swing under the stars

Once again, swing tunes and funky grooves are flowing out of the band room during seventh period in preparation for Friday night’s “Jazz Under the Stars” fundraiser. It is expected to be a night of relaxation, food and music.

“I’m really excited to finally be having a fundraiser for jazz band,” band teacher Carol Allen said. “Plus, it’s always cool when Jazz Band gets a gig that spotlights them. We always try to get more gigs each year. So far, this year is turning out to be one of the most active that I have ever been a part of.”

“Jazz Under the Stars” will be held in the school courtyard at 6:30 p.m. Those who go are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, dinner and desserts to share with others. In addition, there will be soda, water and chips available for a nominal fee. All proceeds benefit the Jazz Band as well as the Senior Class and Junior Class clubs.

“We don’t know exactly what to expect, since this is the first time we will be doing this,” senior Alex Ludeman said. “What I can say is that we are playing a bunch of songs. As in a lot of songs. As in more than we have in a long time. For the people that hear us a lot, you will recognize a lot of songs, but we also have a few new ones that we don’t get to play a lot.”

It is hoped the fundraiser will become an annual event. For Jazz Band, this is a chance to show their endurance, as it will be more than an hour long. The jazz combo “Agility,” the majority of which is in the school’s Jazz Band, also will perform during intermissions.
