XC runs final race at states

The boys’ cross-country team was led by senior Austin Camps, who finished 15th overall, to a 21st place finish at the FHSAA Cross Country State Finals on Saturday.

Out of 24 teams and 185 runners, Sam Oliver was the only eighth-grader to run.

For seniors Austin Camps, Christian Hayes, and  Tyler Adams this was the last race of their high school career.

“I’m glad to be done with the season,” Christian Hayes said. “Hopefully my shins will heal so I can run in college.”

Throughout the season, many runners struggled with injuries. Both senior Grant Gibson and sophomore Jacob Kent had to end the season early due to hip problems.  While Christian Camps, Christian Hayes, Jared Hayes and Ben Pinfield all had to run races while fighting shin splints.

“There’s no telling how good we could have been with seven healthy runners,” Coach Greg Hayes said.

Although four seniors will be lost, expectations are high for next year’s cross country team, as many younger runners are starting to step up and drop their times extensively.
