WCTZ News enforces copyright music rule

Those familiar sounds playing in the background on WCTZ News shows will soon become a thing of the past, according to TV productions teacher Maria Sotolongo.

“We are starting to crack down on copyright music being played on the news,” she said.

If a video containing copyright music is submitted to be on the news it will no longer be accepted, despite the fact that this rule has not previously been enforced.

“If something is submitted with copyright music, they will have to redo it,” Sotolongo said.

Junior TV productions student Cassie Hughey said she doesn’t like the restrictions caused by copyright law.

“I think it’s a horrible rule that you can’t play copyright music because it’s obviously going to make people more interested in the news,” Hughey said. “If the artist is given credit it should be OK.”
