Swim team prepares for Tuesday opener

The swimming season is under way as tryouts and practices have been going on for a week and will continue for another week. The first meet is scheduled for Sept. 6 at Merritt Island High School.

Nobody showed up for tryouts Monday, so were stuck with last year’s swimmers,” sophomore Jay Kundumadathil said. “I guess we still have a chance, especially with our new assistant coach Don Gornto, but it looks like a tough season without any new or veteran swimmers.”

The team, which includes 43 swimmers and divers, will practice on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at Fee Avenue pool.

We lost many senior boys, but I think we can try to win more than half and be in the top four teams for districts,” Head Coach Mike Rochelle said. “The girls’ team has the opportunity to beat some teams that they didn’t last year such as Merritt Island and Viera. Their goal is to win the district championship, and I think they can do that.”

The biggest concern for the coach and team members is the reduced number of swimmers.

We need more seventh-graders, because swimming takes a long time to be good at and we really need boy divers,” Rochelle said.
