Following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Feb. 14, students have been expressing how they feel about the safety on our campus.  Freshman Albert Pont said he sees no reason to make big changes.

“I feel safe on campus,” Pont said.  “I know the school has made the necessary precautions to keep us safe, and I believe Officer [Valerie] Butler, if necessary, will do all in her power to keep us safe in the event of another tragedy like the one in Parkland.”

Freshman Dylan Bissessarsingh said more could be done for safety on campus.

“A lot could be done for campus safety,” Bissessarsingh said.  “The school could have more than one resource officer patrolling during the day or standing guard outside of campus.”

Bissessarsingh said there are ways to find money for this.

“The school could stop wasting money on fancy statues and making the cafeteria look nice,” he said.  “This money could be put towards new officers.”

Pont said he believes the campus is safe overall, but there is room for improvement.

“I think the campus is safe as is,” he said.  “But if it comes to it, the school could install searches to students who they see as at risk.”
