Volleyball team wins first-ever tourney title

Seniors Tess Sheets and Alyssa Johnson combined for a total of 50 kills Saturday to lead the volleyball team to a first-place tournament victory at St. Cloud High School. The team also combined for a total of 111 digs to maintain a solid defense. The team defeated CCA in two solid sets 25-17, 25-9 at the start of the day, and then went on to beat Celebration 25-20, 25-21.

The home team, St. Cloud, challenged the Lady Wildcats by pushing them to play a third deciding set. However, with the Wildcats rallied a strong defensive effort and regrouped their offense to overcome St. Cloud 25-20, 20-25, 15-13, earning them a spot in the finals.

“I’m  really proud of everyone on the team,” sophomore Casey Schauman said. “I’m proud of their effort and it shows with the score.”

Eager to finish tournament play in time for the Homecoming dance at 7:30 p.m. the team resolved to strive for a quick victory against Osceola in the final. Although 2-0 against the Kowboys, the Wildcats did not want to underestimate their opponent.

Setters Sheets and Schauman combined for a total of 21 assists to coordinate a quick offense with help from a consistent defense to seal a 25-23, 25-19 victory. This victory marked the first tournament championship for the school.

“The Wildcats represented themselves and West Shore in a high fashion this weekend when they won the championship match at the St. Cloud invitational tournament,” Coach Bonnie Priester said. “It was a total team effort as the girls brought home the trophy for the first time in school history.”

The finals match ended around 4 p.m. just in time for team members to return to Melbourne and begin their Homecoming preparations.

“Even though Homecoming was tonight, we kept our spirits up, and I’m glad that we can go to Homecoming,” Schauman said. “The fact that we went out and won it just shows of our dedication and effort.”
