The girls’ basketball team is getting ready to compete in the upcoming season. Assistant Coach Brooke Glezen said she and Head Coach Hugo Bain are doing their best to prepare their players for success during this offseason for tryouts.

“We’ve been having conditioning stuff going on since about April of last year,” Glezen said. “We do things all throughout the offseason. We do tournaments over the summer, weight room workouts and open gym Saturdays leading up to tryouts.”

Not only are the basketball players running sprints—they are also mixing up their workouts with other basketball skills to further enhance their ability on the court. 

“We’ll try to mix conditioning with skill drills at the same time, so it covers both aspects,” Glezen said. “My favorite thing is getting to watch the girls who have not played basketball learn the skills and really improve throughout the season.”

According to Glezen, what is most important to the coaches is good fundamentals from the team to win games after tryouts.

“I’m a really big person on fundamentals,” Glezen said. “Proper shooting form and conditioning is a really big thing for me, like running and being in shape that you can play a whole game.”

Even though during this offseason the team lost some of the players from last season, they have new rookie players to take their place and develop with the returning players.

“We lost a lot of players that made a big impact,” Glezen said. “We have a lot of new players, so hopefully they’ll come in and it’ll be a good mix of new and old.”

Tryouts will be held Oct. 30 after school in the gymnasium. 

“We have the potential to be better,” Glezen said. “But it just depends on what the season is and what tryouts look like.”
