Skim-boarders head south for contest

Juniors Scott Adams and Tommy Panouses are planning to make a trip to South Florida’s Lauderdale-By-The-Sea next week for a skim boarding contest hosted by Alley-Oop Skim Inc.

“The drive is about two and half hours,”  Adams said. “I’m going to the contest with Tommy Panouses, who’s a great skimmer.”

The contest is scheduled for  Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I don’t really have a game plan on how to place, but if the waves are lining up nice and the conditions are good, I’ll have greater chances of placing,” Adams said.

The Skim Dance Revolution contest is not only a skim boarding contest but also a free style dance contest.

“Dancing is the next best thing to skimming,” Jason Wilson, Professional skim boarder and owner of Alley-Oop Skim Inc., said. “It’s going to be super fun.”

The contest fees are $30 for amateurs, $50 for professionals and $10 for dancers.

“The money goes towards pro purse, set up, PA system, DJ permits, contest hats, and the numerous expenses that go with putting on a contest,” Wilson said.

This year marks the second time Alley-Oop has put on the Skim Dance Revolution. And while all participants will receive a free lunch and a free contest hat, freebies are not Adams’ primary motivation.

“I’m entering to compete because it’s a great feeling placing in a competition and winning prizes,” Adams said.
