“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” Sirius Black said that in Harry Potter’s Goblet of Fire. The guideline for assessing character pops up through out the Harry Potter series.  This character assessment also is required in science teacher Maggie Molledo’s Harry Potter Club. On Dec. 10, the club held a Harry Potter themed Christmas feast.  

“We are having a holiday party replicated from the movies as well as some activities on the side,” she said. “We are making the Remembralls and corner bookmarks.”

A Remembrall is about the size of a large marble and contains smoke that turns red when its owner has forgotten something. Replicating the orbs was part of the fun, according to Pickering.

“We are taking clear ornaments and putting red ribbon inside of them so that they look like they did in the movie,” she said. “Then they can decorate them with a Sharpie on the outside.”

For the feast, some club members dressed in Harry Potter-style costumes in order to win points for their house.The club boasts 21 middle-school students and 13 high-school students. Pickering was asked if she thought Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw had an unfair advantage of earning house points because their team are larger than Gryfindor and Slytherin.

“They definitely have more people, but we try to keep it fair,” she said. “In the Harry Potter series it’s all about keeping it fair and honest, which is what is practiced in this club.”
