To applaud the middle-schoolers for their accomplishments, the annual awards ceremony was held Tuesday.

Middle-School Student Government Association Vice President Kathryn B. opened the ceremony with the pledge of allegiance.

“I was really nervous,” Kathryn said. “Once I got up there it wasn’t that bad, but I was really scared.”

Kathryn spoke in the place of the middle-school president.

“I’m glad I did it,” she said. “No regrets.”

Students had the opportunity to receive recognition for academic excellence by earning a 4.0 grade-point average. Burgess said  there was probably around 60 students in total recognized for that award. Along with the GPA recognition, awards for class subjects were given out in the form of wall plaques.

The recipient of the Performing Arts award, Shane W, also performed at the ceremony.

“Our Troupe performed ‘Be Prepared’ in costume from ‘The Lion King’,” he said.

The eighth-grader played Banzai in the middle-school production of “The Lion King.” This was the role he continued to play for the ceremony.

“I [also] read the lines for Shenzi,” he said. “The person who played Shenzi in our production of The Lion King couldn’t make it that day.”

Shenzi and Banzai are two hyenas who accompanied the lead of the song, a lion named Scar. Scar was played by seventh-grader Wesley R. Wesley was awarded the 4.0 GPA award and an award for completing 100 service learning hours.

“He went up to get his awards in costume,” Shane said.

The ceremony proceed as usual, with Shane saying he felt the performance went well, despite one error.

“My microphone was on the same frequency as the mikes that all the teachers and administrators used,” Shane said. “So I had to take off all my costume and switch my mike on, then put my whole costume back on. I had to go on about one minute after everyone else.”
