Newspaper, yearbook named All-Florida by FSPA

Both The Roar student newspaper and Arcadia yearbook received All-Florida at the Florida Scholastic Press Association’s annual state journalism convention held at the Disney Hilton from April 28 to April 30.

“I am really happy with the results with the results. I wish we had entered our website. We would have won,” adviser Mark Schledorn said.

Arcadia also won first place for an on-the-spot yearbook contest and The Roar placed second for the front-page competition. Also, yearbook staff member Nikki Gregory, a junior placed second in mixed company, which required her to work with a team of three students from three other schools, and junior Bianca Taraschi placed third in sports photography.

During the review-writing session, students, including senior Alex Deavers, were each given $10 and taken to the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop in Downtown Disney where they were asked to review a menu item in a timed competition.
In addition to competing, journalism and TV production students attended seminars presented by professionals from throughout the country. In addition, they attended an awards banquet and a number of entertainment events, including a dance.

Junior Vanishna Patel said the convention was enjoyable.

“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “But I didn’t expect it to be like this.”
