The Wildcat math team experienced success at the District Math Tournament on Saturday, April 18. The team took 6 first place awards, 3 second place awards, and 1 third place award.

West Shore entered every math division, which consisted of Math 2 Advanced, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-calculus and Calculus/Statistics. Four students participated in each category, comprising the team for that division, and collaborated on both the written test and the math bowl.

Last year, West Shore won a remarkable number of awards, including 10 first places, marking the team as a formidable one.

“When I was first walking up to our table, I heard a group of girls from a different school pointing at the table,” junior and calculus competitor Hunter Schwartz said. “They were saying ‘that’s the team we’ve got to watch out for.’”

While competition this time was harder, the team said they were satisfied with the results overall.

“I think we did extremely well,” eighth-grader and geometry team member Iksha H. said. “We didn’t do as well as last year, but this year’s competition was tougher and I think we did the best we could. It was a really fun experience, and I liked collaborating with everyone about the questions afterwards. I would love to do it again next year.”

Schwartz said he felt similarly about the results.

“It was disappointing to not win much for the calculus team,” Schwartz said. “But it was nice seeing the other teams and getting to hang with friends, even if it was at a math competition.”
