The Letters for Rose club, sponsored by teacher Lisa Rehm, is heartwarmingly dedicated to community service. On Thursdays, Power Hour B in Portable Six, the group has been making handwritten holiday cards for senior citizens.
The club began as a creative solution when student Kayla Hannah struggled to complete her volunteer hours due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Seeking a way to give back to the community, she approached Rehm, and together they founded the club to help senior citizens who were isolated during the pandemic.
“[Hannah] came to me and asked if I would sponsor her and her club for volunteer hours, and I said, ‘of course,’” Rehm said.
Four years later, students continue to gather to create handmade cards. Around Christmas, members make holiday cards or paintings for seniors in nursing facilities. The club has also begun making cards for all staff members during Teacher Appreciation Week.
Through these messages, the club provides volunteer opportunities and helps the older generations.
“Letters for Rose is very important to me because I enjoy writing and making people happy,” senior Emma Brown said. “I feel like what this club does is very beneficial to the community because those in nursing homes can feel joy from the heartwarming cards our club send. I love Letters for Rose.”
