Jazz band to play at assisted living facility

The school’s jazz band will play its annual holiday concert at Victoria Landing, a Melbourne assisted-living facility, Sunday.

“[Playing there] is welcoming,” junior Evan Courtney said. “The old people really seem to enjoy it.”

The band tends to recycle songs from previous winter concerts and include some selections from the 1930s and 1940s.

Last month, the jazz band performed a Veterans Day concert at Victoria Landing.

“We take jazz band out twice a year and give them a free concert,” band director Christopher Houze said. “In return, they give us an appreciative audience — and occasionally, food.”

Houze added the concerts help high-schoolers recognize the need to care for their elders.

“It’s a really great experience,” Courtney said. “The people there are really nice and it’s a good place to play.”
