Gornto steps down as swim coach

Following the end of the swim season, head coach Donald Gornto announced he will not return next season. Athletic Director Tony Riopelle announced the news Nov. 16.

According to junior swimmer Benjamin Castillo, whoever replaces Gornto will have big shoes to fill.

“Because next year is going to be my last year on the swim team, I expect it to be the most memorable one,” he said. “Gornto did a good job coaching considering our team doesn’t have the depth the other teams have, which is to be expected considering the size of our school compared to others.”

Senior Alexandre Beregi said that despite Gornto’s resignation, the team is in a good place going forward.

“We had some newcomers this year and hopefully there will be an even better turnout next year,” he said. “I think we are really going to step it up.”

But improving won’t be easy, according to Beregi.

“We are losing a few seniors such as myself this year which is going to make some of the harder meets like Satellite, Mel High and Viera a lot tougher, but in the upcoming years I think the team is going to pull ahead by a landslide,” he said.
