Girls’ soccer raises funds at festival

The girls’ soccer team took advantage of  the Runaway Country music festival held at Wickham Park on May 4-6 to raise money for next season.

“Since one of the dads, Mike Weber, works for Coke I thought it might be a nice fundraiser for the girls,” Booster Club President Rhonda Shoup said.” “Coke was giving us a small portion of every bottle sold.”

The budget cut for athletics could strain many sports teams next year, so the girls soccer team is preparing.

“Since next year there will probably be no athletic budget from the school, we are trying to bring in money for girls soccer,” Shoup said. “Hopefully with enough fundraising we can keep the player fees smaller then some other schools.”

And the players appeared up to the fund-raising task.

“I volunteered to prepare for a great year next season with the team and to try to not have to pay a lot for the soccer season,” sophomore Micah Weber said. “I will do anything to play soccer because it’s my passion.”

Despite the team’s efforts, the money raised appears to be short of expectations.

“We are not sure of the final numbers, but I don’t think it was as successful as we hoped.” Shoup said. “I still think any money we can put into making sure the girls have a good season is good. Plus it was fun to enjoy listening to good singers while fundraising.”

Weber shared that sentiment.

“I volunteered to help my team for next year, but I was also super-excited to see all the singers because I like country music,” she said. “I went a day to volunteer and a day to go with some of my friends.”
